On the Crisis in Ukraine

Hello, people of the internet! You may have already heard about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. Essentially, Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, mobilized Russian troops and annexed the Crimean peninsula, located in the South-East portion of Ukraine.
While the Russian government has declared the move a "military intervention" for the "protection of ethnic Russians," the United Nations has condemned the move as a gross violation of the territorial integrity of another sovereign nation. I agree with the latter party.

Unfortunately, the Crimean crisis has escalated even further. Russian troops have advanced further than just the Crimean peninsula, and are now securing areas in Eastern Ukraine. Intervention by the Ukrainian government has been weak, as the current government has only been in power for about the past month, following the disappearance of former Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych. While the international community has accepted the annexation of Crimea and will not intervene due to that, it is as of yet unclear how other nation's governments will react to the continued Russian progression.

There have been arising concerns that NATO may get involved in the situation. Again, it's not yet clear as to how the organisation will react. This whole situation is not only unfortunate and unfair to the people of Ukraine, it's also a reminder of how easily international law can be broken, and with so few consequences. We have to remember that laws are only as good as the people and governments bound to them.

If you would like to share your take on the matter, please don't be afraid to do so in the comments below.

knowledge is the wing
wherewith we fly to heaven.
